About CCMR

Recent incidences on crowd disasters indicate the vulnerability of our public gathering places to crowd disasters. India has witnessed several major crowd disasters in the recent past. Human stampede at Patna (Bihar), Datia (Madhya Pradesh), Malabar Hills (Maharashtra), Sabarimala (Kerala) are few among them. We have religious, entertainment, political and sports mass gatherings. But the religious mass gatherings attract more number of people than the other types of mass gatherings. More over many of our religious mass gathering venues are located at vulnerable areas. Hence the risk of crowd crushing and human stampedes is more with religious crowds.

Studies on previous crowd disasters urge the research and development in best practices for pilgrimage crowd management. CCMR was established with a motto of promoting crowd management research to develop appropriate technologies and management practices for religious, sports and entertainment mass gatherings. The research team works in close collaboration with academic institutions, Government Departments, command line forces, event organisers and security agencies. The core team comprised of academicians from Institute of Land and Disaster Management-Kerala, University of Kerala, Tata Institute of Social Sciences- Mumbai, Mahatma Gandhi University-Kerala and Dr.MCR Human Resource Development Institute, Hyderabad.
